Design assignment: Trains

Here's some of the trains that I came up with for the Visual Communications / Form Development class, using the environment I designed in the previous train post. The assignment was to design an environment, then add train designs into the environment.

Below is a sample of one of the ten pages of side views we had to generate before even creating the environment. We transferred our top ten designs out of the seventy into perspective view in the environment.

Finally, here are a few of those placed into the environment drawing.

(I would really like to make that bench someday)

The design assignments are typically two week projects - the first assignment is to generate a mass number of sideviews (usually from 60- 70, with 6-7 on a page,) then the second week is focused on transferring the most interesting of those into a perspective version. Personally the I had the hardest time with the first part of any of the given assignments - generating the designs. I'd be doing ok with cranking out designs up until around page 4 and then I'd get hit by design block! It's like right at halfway I run out of ideas.

From there, it's a crapshoot of whether or not the next half of the pages will be really cool designs where you got all the boring design out of your system and warm up to the do the next half... or else, it ends up for the next half you just generate really ugly weird ones where it's clear you're grasping at straws just to get the numbers out. With the clock ticking and hours melting away like minutes, the possibility of #2 happening increases in inverse proportion with how much time is left until the critique starts, lol...
